Description
An unused circa 1895 postcard depicting Craigdarroch Castle, the front with a coloured photographic image of the south and west sides of Craigdarroch, the facades of gray rusticated ashlar masonry, the slate roof light blueish gray in colour, the blue sky fading into white and pink tinted clouds, ivy vines starting to grow up the side of the south-west corner walls and along the wall of the west garden entrance way, the front lawn with two sets of stone steps, three white hitching posts (also known as bollards) above the right stairway, a red and white awning on a second floor window, bushes in front of the verandas, pegs in the lawn suggesting the presence of water sprinklers, printed at the upper left corner, 'Dunsmuir Castle; Victoria; B.C.' in faded red print in upper and lowercase letters', on the verso 'Post Card' printed in gray coloured block letters, the seller's name and address, 'A.A. Aaronson, Indian Curio Dealer, Victoria, B.C.' printed vertically down the left side, a dotted square for the stamp, on the right side four dotted horizontal lines, the first beginning with an upper case 'M'.
Narrative
This circa 1895 postcard was produced when Joan Olive Dunsmuir lived in Craigdarroch Castle. The colour of the slate roof is wrongly depicted as blueish gray. This is probably because the colourist was not informed that Craigdarroch's slate roof is red. This error is seen in other Castle postcards. The other examples were printed in Germany.
