Description
Black and white photograph of a large stone home named 'Armadale'. Two stories tall with a square crenellated turret on its right. A large amount of ivy growing up the front side. Two bicycles parked in the front.
Narrative
'Armadale' was the home of Senator and Mrs. William John Macdonald (1832-1916). It was a 28 acre estate built in 1877 and sold in 1913. The site occupied four city blocks now bounded by Dallas Rd., Montreal St., Simcoe and Oswego. The name derived from Armadale Castle on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Macdonald was one of British Columbia's first Senators after the province entered Confederation in 1871.

Senator and Mrs. Macdonald's son, Alastair Douglas Macdonald married Joan Olive Bryden, granddaughter of Robert and Joan Olive Dunsmuir.
History of Use
This photograph was first used at Armadale by Senator and Mrs. Macdonald. It was then taken by their son Alastair Douglas Macdonald and daughter-in-law Joan Olive Bryden to their farm named Duntulm in North Saanich, B.C. It was then inherited and used in Victoria B.C. by their daughter Elizabeth Mary Katherine Macdonald. Her son donated the photograph to Craigdarroch Castle in 2009.
