Albert Bredow

Biography
Albert Bredow (German, 1828-1899), a landscape/set painter, was born in Prussia. He lived from 1852 to 1855 in Riga (Latvia), where he worked as a set painter, then in Reval (now known as Tallinn, Estonia), and later moved to Moscow. In 1868, he exhibited in the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg (the artifact document file for 983.793 contains a detailed list of Bredow’s exhibitions).

His painting of Magdeburg Cathedral in Craigdarroch Castle's collection (983.793) is similar to others that he is known to have painted. One of them, pictured at right, is displayed at Rippon Lea, a 19th Century house museum in Melbourne, Australia. It even has the same frame as Craigdarroch's example, although its gilt frame was painted beige by Rippon Lea's owner in the 1930s.
